World Cup Group C Qualification
France put their Euro 2016 final heartbreak behind them and qualified top of their group containing Sweden, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Luxembourg and Belarus. This was expected from such a talented squad and they didn’t really impress us during the qualification campaign. Their average goals scored per game was pretty uninspiring at 1.8, given the level of opposition you would expect a number closer to 3.
Group Stats = W7, D2, L1, 18F, 6A
Denmark took second spot in their trappy group of Poland, Montenegro, Romania, Armenia and Kazakhstan. Their points haul was not sufficient to qualify automatically though and they had to win through a play-off against Ireland. After a dour first leg 0-0 in Copenhagen, Eriksen stepped up and scored three of his side’s five goals in Dublin (they won 5-1). Their campaign saw a few very impressive results like the one in the play-off and also the 4-0 home victory over Poland. The Danes did lose their way on occasion though, losing at home to Montenegro and failing to beat Romania home or away.
Total Qual. Stats (90min results) = W7, D3, L2, 25F, 9A
Peru have gotten to the main event after what is always a tough process in South America. They placed fifth of ten, ahead of Chile on goal difference. This afforded them a play-off against New Zealand in which they played out a stalemate in the first leg before beating the Kiwis comfortably on home soil. That was a theme of their qualification, tough to beat at home but vulnerable away.
Total Qual. Stats (90min results) = W8, D6, L6, 29F, 26A
Australia swept aside Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Bangladesh to finish top of their first group, then things started to get difficult. They finished third in the next phase of qualification behind Japan and Saudi Arabia and ahead of UAE, Iraq and Thailand. They only won half of the games in that group and needed two penalties to get a draw against lowly Thailand. Their third place meant they needed to negotiate two further ties to get to Russia. They scraped past Syria in second leg extra time after seeing their goal under siege and woodwork hit late on in the second leg, normal time. They then drew 0-0 with Honduras away before beating them at home, two of their three goals that day were penalties.
Total Qual. Stats (90min results) = W13, D7, L2, 51F, 18A
World Cup Acca Theory
France are rock solid at the head of affairs here and Denmark are rightly favourites to follow them through to the last 16. Peru will probably struggle with being a long way from home but are a solid unit who I expect to perform with credit. Australia are in the firing line, big time.
We have to make this group pay and that can be done opposing Australia at almost every opportunity. They are already seen as the rags of the group by bookies but sill are overrated. Their qualification chances we rate at 10% here, yet the bookies odds imply they will manage it 18.2% of the time. Unders on total group wins/points/goals will all likely present an opportunity for us closer the time. They have the toughest game (France) first up which is a big disadvantage, the heads could drop after a lesson from Les Bleus. If Denmark were to win the game against Peru it would already start to look an extremely difficult proposition to progress any further for the Socceroos.
