World Cup Group E Qualification
Brazil got it done very impressively in the notoriously tough South American section. They scored more than any other team, conceded the fewest and lost just one game. Their record would have probably been even better but once top spot was assured they took their eye of the ball and drew a couple of winnable games. This team comes here with probably the second best player in the World (Neymar) on current form and an army of talent supporting him. Their qualification campaign was the most impressive of any team heading to Russia.
Group Stats = W12, D5, L1, 41F, 11A
Switzerland ended their campaign with twenty-seven points, as did Portugal. Unfortunately for the Swiss, their goal difference was worse than their fellow group topper. This meant they had to win their play-off against Northern Ireland. They managed this by winning by a single goal away, the only goal scored over the two legs. Taking the same amount of points as the Euro 2016 winners has to be respected and they will be full of confidence come June. The opposition in qualification wasn’t the strongest but you can only beat what is front of you. Portugal, Hungary, Faroe Islands, Latvia and Andorra made up the group.

Serbia overcame a tricky group of Ireland, Wales, Austria, Georgia and Moldova. They finished top by a couple of points, they scored two goals a game on average which is good but conceding a goal a game doesn’t bode well. The nation has always had talented players but politics/internal disputes often prevent the Serbs from reaching their full potential.

Costa Rica gained qualification for the main event by finishing second in the fifth round of qualification in the Central & North American region. The whole process for those teams is by far the most complicated so rather can get anyone confused we will focus on the final round of qualification. They were grouped with Mexico, Panama, Honduras, USA and Trinidad and Tobago. Finishing three points ahead of Panama and Honduras, four ahead of USA was a good accomplishment. Their impressive performance at the 2014 World Cup will give them great belief when competing this Summer.
World Cup Acca Theory
Brazil should have no problems taking top spot in the group but the bookies obviously recognise this, best priced at 1/3 implies a 75% chance of success. We think there is a little bit of juice in this as we rate it a 1/4 shot (80% chance).
Who will take second spot is a much tougher call. Costa Rica were disregarded as no hopes at the last World Cup and ended up topping a group of England, Italy and Uruguay. That was extremely impressive and perhaps the bookie SkyBet has disrespected the Central Americans by offering 5/1 (6.00) that the group finishes with Brazil 1st and Costa Rica 2nd.
Neither Switzerland nor Serbia can be written off but for betting purposes, we see little value in markets surrounding them currently.
