World Cup Group G Qualification
Belgium did as expected with their super talented group of players. They made light work of qualification past Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Cyprus and Gibraltar. Winning nine, drawing one with a scoring average of over four per game. As a first eleven, there are not many better around. Having played in the last couple of major tournaments, several of this team should be able to draw on that experience, galvanise the group and allow them to play to the best of their abilities.
Group Stats = W9, D1, L0, 43F, 6A
England handled business well in qualification, that has not really been their problem over the years. Their group was made up of Slovakia, Scotland, Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta. The Three Lions weren’t prolific scorers throughout but were very stingy in defence, conceding only three goals in ten games. There are a few top drawer performers in the ranks and progress from the group looks highly likely. We don’t however, feel that they will be a genuine final winning contender.
Group Stats = W8, D2, L0, 18F, 3A
Tunisia completed their qualification by topping a group of DR Congo, Libya and Guinea. They were just a point clear of DR Congo as the dust settled on the group. This highlighted how important their come-from-behind draw from two down was, against the Leopards in Stade des Martyrs. Their passion and commitment are always there to see when competing and more of the same will be seen this Summer. Unfortunately given the group, that probably won’t be enough to see them through.
Total Qual. Stats (90min results) = W6, D2, L0, 15F, 6A
Panama are the lowest ranked team to qualify through the North & Central American region. The finished third in the final qualifying group by virtue of goal difference. They won only three games from ten and ended with a negative goal difference. Without being unduly harsh, they are not going to play much of a part at the tournament proper.
Final Group Stats = W3, D4, L3, 9F, 10A
World Cup Acca Theory
It will be a tight run thing between Belgium and England for topping this group. The game between them will likely decide it. It will see England’s solid defence given a stern examination by Belgium’s array of attacking talent. Tunisia should be able to beat Panama which will almost definitely be enough to bag them third place.
There is very little in the way of value available in this market. The bookies have gotten smarter over the years and no longer price England up at stupidly short odds. They are slight second favourites for topping the group which looks fair.
